Powerful presentation. Save this vlog until AG Bell ’s coming-up conference.

Just get some scenarios.

AG Bell will become America’s communists. AG Bell did *NOT* follow the freedom laws such as the bill of rights and declaration of independence.

Prepare for the AG Bell’s conference this Summer.

We are with you all the way.

That is why I had to write a poetry about innocent Deaf children being implanted. Go and seek on my blog. It has the poetry written and I also created the vlog on that (ASL in my poetry).

Some people don’t buy that. I am trying to get them to understand their true identification being diminished

Your report is very dismaying but the truth! I would suggest to have a transcript written below your vlog so that your vlog will show up in Google Search. If you need help with the transcript, let me know.

I am shocked about the idea for parents of ci children to sign a devil’s contract that they cannot admit their children in schools for the Deaf. It is going too far!

DBC is the place to start by taking actions and for all of you who care to make the difference, see you at AG Bell Conference in June at Milwaukee!

We need to save Deaf children NOW!

I agree Barb DiGi’s comment and we need to save Deaf children now! and even we should also save Deaf School in all of USA. What it made me so angry about CI and the doctor have not knowledge about Deaf culture.

Doctor and CI Specalist are devil to deal with the native of hearing parent dont know much about Deaf and CI. I cannot understand why the contract is really fool at deaf babies and distract and believe what the doctor’s recommended and with the doctor’s recommended should banned CI.

I am really unhappy to hear that.

How very true! I’m curioius as to know what is the name of that Waukesha Middle school you are talking about. I moved to WI from IL years ago and was shocked to find so much apathy here from deaf in WI compared to IL. Not only that, so much negativie energy, instead of deaf working with deaf, it’s the other way around. Also major shock was many service organization is run by hearings! CDHH is one of them. There were a few deaf that got involved, but it was run by hearings and controlled by hearings. We need team work, and that means postitive energy and learning to get along with others and focus on keeping deaf community alive.

What to do? Besides the Rally this summer, we can do other things. One idea would be to increase awareness. How? WAD or NAD should consider some kind of “Ad campaign” to spread awareness about ASL and Deaf Culture. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee and work with all deaf people, not only in state of WI but, all over the USA!

I wouldn’t worry too much about Anna S. since she is probably a victim of “plantation mentality” that hearing people brainwashed her to say CI is good for deaf people.

Hi Jack,

This is a very high quality video and I appreciate your opinions. Part of me wonders if you aren’t missing the big picture. Surely cochlear implants are changing the dynamics of Deaf culture, but let’s not ignore the evolution of how education has viewed disabilities and differences.

In the past, any one who was different from what was considered ‘normal’ was sent to an institution. Children with autism, children with cognitive delays, children with visual impairments, Deaf children… Increasingly, schools are moving towards an inclusive model – one in which teachers differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of a variety of learners in their classroom. Learning standards and expectations are held high for EVERY student. This pedagogical evolution has caused a decline in enrollment in every type of institutionalized educational setting. Autistic students no longer attend institutions… children with cognitive delays no longer attend institutions. These students now attend their neighborhood school. In my eyes, an institution – in it’s isolated setting with lower learning standards- marginalizes Deaf children by implying that they cannot learn side-by-side, to the same ability as their hearing peers.

As vocal members of the Deaf community, we need to consider whether the death of Deaf institutions might very well be a good thing.

Powerful message! I don’t even understand why DCARA Board members hired a person with cochlear implant to represent our community. It showed that they wanted the hearing commubnity to know that Deaf with CI can’t be leaders. Myth! Awful, poor, shameful decision they made for our community. I can imagine many other Deaf community have selected leaders with CI. Bad decision! It will give wrong message to the hearing community that Deaf community approve CI and depend on CI to be our leaders. No No No! Wake up Deaf Americans!!! CI leaders are like sheep in wolve clothing. That is scary!

Wow, so POWERFUL video! I applauded you for that! Great job. I find it sad that some people decided to stop using sign language and speak in voice only. That is something I just don’t get it.

I’m not surprised about them not wanting these kids to ever look at people with ASL because they know, I mean seriously, they KNOW that sometimes when someone look at others using ASL, they can easily catch their eyes on ASL wishing they can sign.

As for Deaf Clubs, very interesting how more clubs has been closed over the years. CI might be the major reason of this, but there are also other reasons why more of them were closed. I had a chat with bunch of Deafies a few months ago talking about how much we missed going to Deaf Clubs, they said reasons why they were closed are more CI users that don’t go anymore, too many crab theory that hurts rest of Deafies not wanting to go anymore, and few others. I find it interesting to know how the way they look at it.

Ah, I can’t believe the hospital tried to convince to take the boy in to get CI and not allowing to go to Deaf school oh and can’t use signs. That is pretty messed up!

Thanks so much for sharing this with us! You ROCK! :-D

About C’s comment about Wis Deaf community doing nothing…

There are many Deaf people with good heart in Wis who prefer to work behind the scenes to avoid having their ideas stolen by other people or organizations who want attention and credit but do nothing effective.

We are happy to have Jack Barr to speak up for our Deaf community and stay positive to support our Deaf community to keep our culture and language alive!

I hope many of you understand that DBC is not “against” CI, rather it is against the mission of AGB, the philosophy of AVT advocators to mislead parents that ASL is hurting their babies/children. While we cannot stop parents from having their babies/children implanted, we can however, promote awareness about the benefit of ASL! There is no harm for CI’s to use ASL, actually, it will benefit them a lot more. Anytime we see anyone “ban” ASL, that is when we should jump in and advocate for ASL. We need to quash that misconception about ASL.

That is my take on DBC’s mission.

We don’t know that CI is the reason for many changes in the deaf community. For sure, it is mainstreaming which causes many kids to not be aware of what is out there in the deaf community. I have seen more and more CI’s involved in deaf community. I hope deaf people do not reject them, but welcome them into the deaf community. They are just as deaf as we are. I view CI as high tech hearing aids. While many of us would never make that choice to get implants, we need to be open and welcoming with them. Do we reject deaf or HOH people who wear Hearing aides?

I do however strongly feel that we deaf need to stop being passive and apathic. We need to be more proactive and make sure there are deaf people running the “service” organization.

To “response to C”,

I know there are many deaf people with good heart in WI. I’m not as involved here as I used to be in IL. So, there might be things I’m not aware of. I just am not used to seeing many hearing running organizations (not deaf club, what i mean is like CDHH and other “service” organization). I feel deaf people should be in charge since they know more about deaf people’s needs than hearings. Just my opinion.

Interesting vlog…

It’s interesting how you blame cochlear implant for the reduction in the deaf school, clubs, and other things. I have to say that I strongly disagree with you maybe because of my experience.

I have extreme respect for few vloggers and bloggers like Amy Cohen Enfron, Aidan Mack, and few others. Even I may disagree with them about few things about Alexander Graham Bell Association. But at the same time, I don’t agree with few things that AGB did. Overall, I will have to say that I do appreciate that AGB did provide the support that my parents needed even I am not the product of oralism nor sign language. I can kind of understand Deaf people’s perspective on the oralism but at the same time, I can see the other side.

Yes, I will be at the conference this June but not on DBC’s side.

Jarom,

Jack is not blaming anyone for getting CI. It is the attitude that AGB has that won’t let deaf babies to learn sign. Researchers proved that signing helps baby to increase their intelligence.

Can you tell me why AGB is run by mostly hearing people when they should allow the deaf people with CI to run their organization?

Can you tell me why Gallaudet established CI center for high number of failures that enrolled Gallaudet?

Can you tell me why there is more successful deaf leaders that use ASL than ones that don’t use ASL? Please name one successful deaf person with CI.

I hate to say this but AGB is a racist organization that they think hearing people are better than deaf people so therefore they need to make deaf people with CI to become a “fake hearing person” when they should be open to all kind of communication.

Reply

December 2, 2007 at 4:53 am

Jarom M.

If you research the history of AGB. You will find that they used to have one or two leaders who are deaf with CI that ran their organization.

There are so many successful deaf people that remain to be involved in the hearing world instead of deaf community which is understandable.

What do you define as failure? successful? Maybe those people with cochlear implant define failure and successful way different than you do? Because I do. It bothers me when deaf people expects me to hear 100% with my implants and I know many implant users who feel the same way.

Racist is used to describe the person who discriminate against the race. I think the word you are looking for is audist. I could say the same for many deaf people who are not open to all kind of communication methods or all kind of hearing devices like cochlear implants.

I am not against any communication methods but I do have my preferences but I do not preach it or shove it down the person’s throat. Everybody have their own opinions and preferences

Scoff, only one or two leaders? How many leaders did NAD have during their history? ‘

If you claimed that there are so many successful deaf people with CI in the hearing world then why aren’t they involved with AGB organization? Wouldn’t you agree that AGB still running their “paternalistic” attitude toward deaf people?

Why don’t you do your math and figure out how many failures out there today since I am sure you will be surprised to see an alarming high number of people? Like Vaughn said in his vlog that they are probably going through deaf identity crisis right now and don’t know who they are anymore or would probably live the rest of their lives being isolated or being embarrassed of what they have gone through.

I am correct that I called them racists instead of audists. If you look the definition for racist which is “The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others” and “Racial discrimination is treating people differently through a process of social division into categories not necessarily related to “race”.

This shows why AGB won’t encourage deaf babies to learn sign language or allow them to communicate with people with sign language because they believe that their race of people with CI is far better than the race of people that use ASL. I don’t call deaf people with CI racists but victims.

Everyone should have their own preferences and entitled to their own opinion but AGB need to set the story straight to promote all kinds of communications for parents to decide instead of focusing only CI on their kids.

Wisconsin people are ACTIVELY preparing for the big AGB conf and they are working closely with the DBC. In the meanwhile, we got Jack and his colleagues doing awareness vlogs, etc.

As for the mentalities that 1) Deaf activists are forcing ASL down people’s throat and that 2) ASL is “on par” with “communication options”…
Hogwash.

1) AGB is shoving Oralism down all our throats– and most especially hearing parents’ throats. AGB is running around telling families to not use sign language. So the assertion that Deaf activists are “forcing ASL” is misplaced blame/anger at best, and an excuse to avoid facing the truth- that the AGBAD exists to suppress Deaf babies’ good education, life, and happiness- and while doing these, get rich through the Volta Bureau’s investments.

As for 2) ASL “on par” with “options”. Sigh. Really? Are these equal? Do hearing students in the U.S. have a “choice” between the English language, morse code, mathematical equations, or musical lyrics as the “language of instruction” during the academic day? No. They are expected to use English, period. Sure, there are ESL classes- but they ultimately are dropped for English immersion.

If people really understood that ASL is THE language, and incidentally, ASL INCREASES English development, everybody would support ASL without reservations.

Anyway, keep vloggin’ Jack- every time I see your vlog, I get more and more hopeful that Deaf babies will have a better future.

HEY! Vaughn! Are you whiner? Or rumormonger? On this vlog it seem that you did not give any statistics in reality of churchgoers and dwindling deaf clubs. I myself attend church regularly and rarely see elitism or Gally crowds at church… dwindling deaf clubare more likely caused by CC on tv and TTy and video relay… Well we are in eletronic age, so CI stay around until new process to replace CI… To me, CI is ok for deaf babies’s future opporunity… Against CI, future deaf babies will suffer in lacking of good job oppororunity… you need to look around , what kind of various job deaf people can do? Lots of jobs are out sourcing to other countries. Maybe you prefer to see future deaf live on welfare or SSI Am not surprise that our government support CI because it is more cheaper in long run…No more SSI, interpreting service, state school expense, and demands from deaf community…

>There is no harm for CI’s to use ASL, actually, it will benefit them a lot more.

There are many people in this country who are frightened of ANY foreign language, ASL included. As a long-time student of ASL and of French I’ve seen the prejudice that many Americans have about anything they regard as out of the ordinary. ASL doesn’t just benefit deaf children and adults. It’s also a fantastic language for pre-verbal children to use. These children are shown to have a much lower level of frustration because they have a way to communicate their needs when they cannot do so vocally.

There are also situations (like scuba-diving, skydiving, rock-concerts, noisy job sites, silent military maneuvers, or driving in separate cars) when vocal communication will not work. ASL is ideal in these situations.

What’s interesting to me as a hearing person is that both sides of the debate suffer from the same inability to understand the other side of the fence. Very few hearing parents will ever know the beauty of ASL, the thrill of a truly fluid non-verbal converstation, or the warm embrace of deaf culture. On the other hand, there is simply no way most people in the deaf community will ever understand what it means to a hearing person to hear a symphony, the rustling of autmn leaves, or the laughter of their children. This is nothing against the deaf community (whom I love), but it’s just a fact of life.

Both sides are unable to understand truly each other, so I don’t see this debate going away. If there were a way that each side could spend a day in the other side’s shoes, we might have some way to find a compromise.

I shared this vlog with my mom, who is a CODA; see below her response.
___________________________________________________________

I just viewed the e-mail regarding the implants and am truly saddened by the outcome.

For hearing parents unfamiliar with what is available to the deaf community, when someone comes in and offers them an alternative regarding the future of a deaf child vs. hearing child, they will be easily swayed to jump at the implant. These are people that have never been exposed to the wonderful, tight-knit community of the deaf culture. As a child of deaf parents, the deaf “family/friends” we grew up with was something few groups experience, I would imagine.

The video brought out many emotions but the most prominent one is that so much may be lost because the “awareness” is not out there being passed onto the hearing community. And, I strongly agree with the tunnel-vision theory of the video; it is just easier to follow the medical lead. After all, doctors are all knowing and “God-like” (snicker).
