My name is Earl Mangold,am total deaf. I work for metro king county transit in Seattle, Wash as bus mechanic for 25 plus years. I have CDL with medical examiner’s certificate and intrastate medical waiver certificate. Happened in March 2006, Metro transit Managments had meeting with me and ADA councilor and an intrepter. They make an decision to change new high standard CDL as follow FMCSA, as told by TRANSIT LAWYER because I am total deaf. I cant drive transit bus off to freeway or public to any road but I can drive bus on metro property with cdl require. I want to tell you I have many experiences with drive 40ft bus and 60ft artic bus off to freeway and through seattle downtown, even drove heavy duty tow truck to tow disable transit bus. now i am frustrated and I wrote my complain file to HRC and EEOC They agreed with metro, Why? EVEN I passed federal physical qualification and myself trucker.. I doing for other deaf person’s dream be trucker and current deaf trucker need equal as hearing trucker with federal laws. I haven’t had time to sit down and watch all three videos but I’m not sure if I have the stamina to keep my cool through all the videos. I was getting a little ticky with the first one. My father is deaf and has been driving semi trucks for a long time now. It’s his dream to go OTR (over the road) some day and I think that is a good dream for him. My father is a perfectly good driver and hasn’t got into any accidents in his semi and I do believe, only one with his car but as I said, that was an accident. It happens. I strongly support deaf people in their pursuit to drive semi’s since they are regular people. What I mean by that is, just because they can’t hear doesn’t make them stupid like many people automatically assume. What I’m trying to get at is that hearing people are selfish and that we need to allow deaf people the chance to drive semi or any other truck if they so desire. I think it’s bogus that we won’t. I think we’re stupid for doing that. After all, Deaf people are just like hearing with one little difference. They can’t hear.
I’m sure I probably got a few things wrong or misread something and if I have please let me know. I plan to spread this to all my friends and let them know. I may belong to a young generation, but man, I plan to fight to the bitter end. After all, to make changes one must fight.
Hey, I feel really strong myself to keep fighting with Washington DC to perimit to whole deaf people who can drive 18 wheeler truck travel anywhere USA North ,South,East,West . Beacuse who teach thier child how to drive truck travel though from parents or teacher no matter what deaf can learn how to drive big truck 18 wheel with 10 to 15 shift. that how they learn how to drive then go to school class and take pass test. BUT I ever notice Teacher are kind afriad of deaf people can’t drive because it would happen accdient or can’t hear as well. it’s really wrongfulness it make teacher feel negtive thier feel about thier self. no matter what DEAF can do it.
I went to AZ, phoneiz SWIFT 3 time in ( 2003,2004,2005) go class because there no an inerpreter for me to be in that class for me. and it really hard for me to understand to see teacher stand front forward to broad and he speaking too fast and I can’t catch read his lip behind his head back no face. that how i feel bit complain to get inerpreter in our class. after class I walk to teacher, ( I write a note to teacher) can u explain me clear to understand what u stand write broad forward can’t understand word speak… teacher happy help me. but he kind feel like wired to me because i act stand up strong look at him ( mad ) ” i need an inerpreter ASL.. He said “no” i can’t afford to pay an inerpreter..i said no no our Divison of Vocational Rehabilitation will pay for it..and Teacher still said no. So dvr said forget it and leave class and go home. I feel kind upset myself but no matter I will come back again furture til I won back to work hope my lucky furture.
I feel that not fair as hearing people feel support deaf can do it. SEE I told you that those who people can do support to drive truck there no matter what teacher or class or some else doing wrong things to deaf people not allow to drive. what about deaf people who can drive small car, truck,small bus,farmer truck etcl like that.
I think some of hearing people are kind of blind because they not know about deaf people’s feel about things are 100% CAN DO IT.

Deaf people should be treated like everybody else….Can they drive? Yes! Can they understand others, hearing and non hearing? Yes! I find it ridiculous to say anything else besides the fact that I am hearing and have had several accidents so I guess hearing other cars didn’t make the difference in not having the accidents!

previously i has taken new drivers that joined the company down to this big “city” half hour south of us cuz they got this commercial vehicle inspector who takes the truckers on the road test similar to a road test in a car the inspector there knew i am deaf but what surprised me was when i let the new driver take the rig there he would tell me no no dont let him drive you drive cuz you have a license and he doesnt i said okey-dokey so from then on i drive it down there with the new hires
the other thing was i had the same inspector insist that i take a road test with this auto transport trailer ( 83 feet long empty 90 94 ft full of cars ) so i thought what the heck and i did good and i took 3 pulls out of the backing up portion of the test you back the trailer and tractor onto a side street which is 90 degrees to your left and align it within the orange cones normally you are allowed 5 pull forwards meaning you pull forward to align the trailer and then back up again ok i only needed 3 and the inspector said if you can back this in which is not intended for your size of trailer and tractor you can back up anything wished i had his statements on a recorder
the worst part i think about having a car over the hood is you gotta watch for those light poles when you making a turn i go into the turn and then swing back so the car fenders miss the pole and then turn back past the pole and the make the turn like a zigzag turn some turns were tight so i move a lane away before i make the turn i felt like a road hog but my job is to deliver those cars undamaged the “swing room” the section where the car behind the sleeper and the first car on the trailer sometimes is real close i know of a company driver who took out a light pole the other day and the one guy of the company people once shook a pole so bad the light fixture on the top fell out and went thru the roof of a van on the trailer totalled the van i heard/see
sorry i had to skip out earlier than i wanted to had to go to this raffle anyway my damages is oh jeez once on a load to bismarck north dakota i dropped one off there and went north to minot that is hour half north of biz on the way i encountered a gaggle of geese that flew out of this pothole due to the diesel noise they swung close to the truck and i thought nothing of it till i got to minot apparently one of them struck the tailgate of a mpv (foreign suv) and took out the glass partition and i didnt know it and the glass fell down to the bottom of the trailer and of course i was going 70 mph and the glass pieces were like a sandblasting thingy and took out this new van and the rest of the units behind it by time i got to minot to drop those remaining units off i got depressed big time man just like casey at bat at mudville 5000 dollars something company paid for it but i got reminded of it just once cuz the boss said others did a lot worse more often but it was on my shoulders and i was more careful since
the greatest stress on me when i am on the asphalt is ah if i had to smoke this van with 7 kids in it cuz it pulled in front of me and i was nt able to stop in time what is the headline in tmw paper qq deaf dumb driver kills 7 instead of dumb van driver pulls in front of a semi yep i almost did so many times i lost count usually this van pull in front of me and then flick a right turn signal half way down the block and wait seems like the ma knew ez ins money there at those kids expenses i had to pull to the righty and it didnt make my day looks so bright so you take note and respect those truck drivers and make their day an easy one my wife tells her kids now after she rode with me couple times i remmy that day in those cities traffic she slid from the sleeper bunk to the shifter cuz i had to brake just a trifle cuz this fucker didnt blink lights and cut in front of me to move to another lane oh what about those morons who speeeeeeeeeed up to pass me and then slow down and then pull into the exit forcing me into the fast lane but car is coming thru as well trying to beat me to the same or next exit thought what is their hurry to waste gas and ask for an automatic or free and extra burial
sad about those stupid gally protesting last spring got a lot of bad feedback paying those taxes to see those idiots damaging stuff i paid a lot of taxes due to my income and see those on ssdi go on to dc and damaging gally stuff wait some good people yup but bad reputation now just get the law and order episode couple wks ago whereas 35 deaf people got job doing this one all protesting i was ashamed so vocal in demanding interpreters and i am hauling and paying taxes for those morons those with ba or more qqq degrees from gally and still on ssdi they should use their “degree” for a better cause instead of ssdi cuz it is easier oh wait i am off that subject about deaf truckers so sorry if i offend any deafy out there \\\ so i dont get fired gn
Hello,Jack, thank you but let me clarifty you on NAD and my tow trucks.
Frist at all, We (my lawyer included) called and emailed NAD IN Oct 2005 to ask for thier assistance with this regulation situation and NAD responded us back and turned us down and told us they already brought this case before FMCSA hearing some years ago they lost this case and buried it they were not able to help us at all during this time but hope NAD can prove me wrong and would help sometime in future
Secondly, one of my fleet, a 12 ton wrecker which we ran daily basis, most are light duty towing like auto’s, small trucks, eqiupments and sometime small buildings also doing medium duty towing and I drive a 12 ton wrecker that wieghed under 26,000 lbs which is a non-CDL truck,but the real picture here
I can drive my own tow truck anywhere within my own state but not drive out of this state (that is BIG NO!) without a CDL because it is a commicial truck and I can tow anything but NO more than 10,000 lbs towages which is bigger than the duallies like 8 feet dump trucks, flatbed trucks, box trucks like Ryder’s or U-haul etc as about all single axles vans or trucks or RV’s ( that’s other BIG NO!) I need a CDL to tow heavier than 10,000 lbs or interstate driving ( out of states)
But dang, I am sorry to admit that I broke this rule everyday and still do until that regulation revised !! Again, thanks, Jack and Hey you, all trucking brothers and sisters keep up fighting until this regulation revised!
I just joined Women In Trucking to support the women in trucking because they just broke that massive “glass ceiling” or the barriers in terms of meaningful, gainful employment opportunity in trucking. I have been following the trucks that are driven by women and they are as good as mine; safety and alert. I noticed the women drivers do take good care of their rigs and perform good following distance relationship between other vehicles in all kinds of traffic situation. http://www.WomenInTrucking.org
Do you need your ears to help you to determine your following distance? No! You use your eyes and your mirrors more often! I scan my mirrors more often than the most CDL manuals “recommended”. When I go up and down the mountains, I scan farther up and down, looking for runaway trucks often. Suzanne E. Lee needs to recognize that it is impossible to determine the “acceleration and de-acceleration velocity” of yours and the other vehicles by listening only. Your vision provides you the most accurate information.
Admit it; it is time to update the old hearing requirements. I DO NOT believe that the warning buzzers frequencies are best at 2,000HZ or higher. It should be set at lot lower because you guys need to separate the frequencies apart from the radio, cell phones, and the CB. I have noticed some drivers that their hearing got overloaded so easily! How? I saw in their body language. What does Suzanne has to say? I believe her work is dangerous because she is training the readers to depend on their hearing only when it time to drive.
A token suggestion…just add a vibrator and put it under the seat. So you can leave your radio on full blast and still be able to feel the vibrating when warning alarm goes off. I use the vibrator to wake me up. Even, when the engine is idling during my sleeper berth time, I am able to identify the difference between the vibrating alarm and massive pulsing frequency of the power stoke…of my trusty Detroit Diesel. One time, I did identify a difference between healthy diesel injectors from tired and worn out ones. When wheel bearings is about getting shot, you will feel frequency that transmit right through the steering shaft and end up at your steering wheel! Low on power steering fluid will give you high frequencies “pitch and growl” Leaking coolant gives you a sweet smell, or leaking differential oil gives you strong odor, or burnt transmission oil will give you specific scent.
Hence, it is time to get your touch sensor off from the shelves, give her a major tune-up…and enjoy the musical concrete slabs…we know that for a long time.
I would like to talk about trucking school that refused to provide ASL interpreter or accepting ASL interpreter from Voc Rehab. I suggest that you file a complain with EEOC. “U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission”. I’ve done that two time against U.S. Postal Service and Safeway. It is easy to file a complain against trucking school. All you need to do is looking to how to file a complain. Look for your local office. Conact them. Then they will sent you some forms for you to write down to complain about them. Then they will set up a meeting with you and trucking school. EEOC will provide you ASL interpreter. Try to do it soon before limit time expires. GOOD LUCK!!

Sounds like you guys need get back to the “drawing board” and figure out what is best what to do next. Driving company trucks to Washington, DC without the “bill of lading” is illegal. Second, they are not that cheap, it can cost you up to thousands and thousands of dollars if you bring tractor-trailers to there.
I suggest you guys to study more in depth how the truck driver training school teaches their students and start talking to instructors. I bet you will learn more and more about them. That is the first step. Once you get CDL then you will understand more in depth. Then, you need to go on the road for at least 4 weeks with the trainers before you can go solo. That is not easy as you think and you need to log at least 200,000 miles before you can call yourself as a “trucker”
Some companies will take you in after 6 months solo, some after 1 year and others take you in after 2 years. You can tell that there is so much to learn how to handle your massive set of wheels in every situation.
Start talking to your legislators and I believe it is the right step to get it started.

Hello to all deaf truck drivers and everyone on this site. My name is Frank. I am not deaf but just wanted to wish everyone here the very best in trying to change the laws so that you can have the chance to drive. I hope in the near future, everyone here can drive a truck if they want to. I just happened to run across this website and think you guys & ladies are doing a great job with your fight to drive. I have been a truck driver for over 25 yrs and sure wish the truck driving industry had you guys on the road. I can tell by your enthusiasm, that you all really want to drive and would do a great job if given the chance. Another reason this site means something to me is that my cousin is deaf and I grew up knowing how hard my cousin and all of you on this website have it each day compared to me,especially if you’re not given the chance to work like everyone else. I’m 31 years old, and I’m hearing impaired. And yes, I am a truck driver. I’ve been driving for 5 years, and I have never had a problem with anything like everyone else are.
So, I still just cannot believe, and am still appalled by all the discriminations that all deaf people who even has a CDL license or permit and they have been rejected by the opportunity to drive a truck.
I’m not going to make a long story here. All I need to say is:
NO MATTER WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE… COPS, BOSSES, TRUCKING COMPANIES, D.O.T PHYSICAL DOCTORS….. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO REFER TO THE FMCSR BOOK AND FOLLOW THE FINE PRINT IN THERE. 40 DB OR LESS. PERIOD. END OF STORY.

Have been reading all the problems…. I myself passed the class B with airbrake, and the DMV wont give me the CDL license cause I cant hear.
Been calling the Dept of Labor and captiol of my home state.
all their words was “anyone who cant hear a wisper by 20 steps away cant get CDL license”
By the way the wisper issue isnt related to the truck itself, it is outside the door.
DMV do give out spanish CDL handbook which is not fair to American.

Why about Deaf who owner big RV or homemobile for travel any state? which don’t have request CDL same idea about driver truck.
Better to ask Dept of Motor Vehicle or insurance company about which best rate low accident for deaf or hearing? Most high percent hearing people use celliphone while driver and lot accidents. They don’t care about it. Like hearing people who drunk driving high percent than not much deaf. Deaf know about obey Law better than hearing. I wish, Federal Govement chairperson will be first became deaf person then will change law every state. If any state don’t accept then order close of business or cut fund.

My name is Earl Mangold,am total deaf. I work for metro king county transit in Seattle, Wash as bus mechanic for 25 plus years. I have CDL with medical examiner’s certificate and intrastate medical waiver certificate. Happened in March 2006, Metro transit Managments had meeting with me and ADA councilor and an intrepter. They make an decision to change new high standard CDL as follow FMCSA, as told by TRANSIT LAWYER because I am total deaf. I cant drive transit bus off to freeway or public to any road but I can drive bus on metro property with cdl require. I want to tell you I have many experiences with drive 40ft bus and 60ft artic bus off to freeway and through seattle downtown, even drove heavy duty tow truck to tow disable transit bus. now i am frustrated and I wrote my complain file to HRC and EEOC They agreed with metro, Why? Because they follow FMCSA. I still work for metro transit as mechanic Thank for read my comment Earl

I’m very thank to Jack Barr to set up this video & Jack’s website. about discrimiation on truck driver, it make me feel to more fight and stronger.. EVEN I passed federal physical qualification and myself trucker.. I doing for other deaf person’s dream be trucker and current deaf trucker need equal as hearing trucker with federal laws. In Part 3 of discrimination Jack’s message is very impressed! I agree with him 100 percent.. We still need to keep fight & support Federal law to change.. Remember Martin Luther King’s comment say? “I have a DREAM”. So we should follow as his steps and we will be sucessful! thank you Jack Barr again please keep it UP! & keep truckin’!

I haven’t had time to sit down and watch all three videos but I’m not sure if I have the stamina to keep my cool through all the videos. I was getting a little ticky with the first one. My father is deaf and has been driving semi trucks for a long time now. It’s his dream to go OTR (over the road) some day and I think that is a good dream for him. My father is a perfectly good driver and hasn’t got into any accidents in his semi and I do believe, only one with his car but as I said, that was an accident. It happens. I strongly support deaf people in their pursuit to drive semi’s since they are regular people. What I mean by that is, just because they can’t hear doesn’t make them stupid like many people automatically assume. What I’m trying to get at is that hearing people are selfish and that we need to allow deaf people the chance to drive semi or any other truck if they so desire. I think it’s bogus that we won’t. I think we’re stupid for doing that. After all, Deaf people are just like hearing with one little difference. They can’t hear.
I’m sure I probably got a few things wrong or misread something and if I have please let me know. I plan to spread this to all my friends and let them know. I may belong to a young generation, but man, I plan to fight to the bitter end. After all, to make changes one must fight.

Hey, I feel really strong myself to keep fighting with Washington DC to perimit to whole deaf people who can drive 18 wheeler truck travel anywhere USA North ,South,East,West . Beacuse who teach thier child how to drive truck travel though from parents or teacher no matter what deaf can learn how to drive big truck 18 wheel with 10 to 15 shift. that how they learn how to drive then go to school class and take pass test. BUT I ever notice Teacher are kind afriad of deaf people can’t drive because it would happen accdient or can’t hear as well. it’s really wrongfulness it make teacher feel negtive thier feel about thier self. no matter what DEAF can do it.
I went to AZ, phoneiz SWIFT 3 time in ( 2003,2004,2005) go class because there no an inerpreter for me to be in that class for me. and it really hard for me to understand to see teacher stand front forward to broad and he speaking too fast and I can’t catch read his lip behind his head back no face. that how i feel bit complain to get inerpreter in our class. after class I walk to teacher, ( I write a note to teacher) can u explain me clear to understand what u stand write broad forward can’t understand word speak… teacher happy help me. but he kind feel like wired to me because i act stand up strong look at him ( mad ) ” i need an inerpreter ASL.. He said “no” i can’t afford to pay an inerpreter..i said no no our Divison of Vocational Rehabilitation will pay for it..and Teacher still said no. So dvr said forget it and leave class and go home. I feel kind upset myself but no matter I will come back again furture til I won back to work hope my lucky furture.
I feel that not fair as hearing people feel support deaf can do it. SEE I told you that those who people can do support to drive truck there no matter what teacher or class or some else doing wrong things to deaf people not allow to drive. what about deaf people who can drive small car, truck,small bus,farmer truck etcl like that.
I think some of hearing people are kind of blind because they not know about deaf people’s feel about things are 100% CAN DO IT.

Deaf people should be treated like everybody else….Can they drive? Yes! Can they understand others, hearing and non hearing? Yes! I find it ridiculous to say anything else besides the fact that I am hearing and have had several accidents so I guess hearing other cars didn’t make the difference in not having the accidents!

size doesnt matter just common sense and courtesy
previously i has taken new drivers that joined the company down to this big “city” half hour south of us cuz they got this commercial vehicle inspector who takes the truckers on the road test similar to a road test in a car the inspector there knew i am deaf but what surprised me was when i let the new driver take the rig there he would tell me no no dont let him drive you drive cuz you have a license and he doesnt i said okey-dokey so from then on i drive it down there with the new hires
the other thing was i had the same inspector insist that i take a road test with this auto transport trailer ( 83 feet long empty 90 94 ft full of cars ) so i thought what the heck and i did good and i took 3 pulls out of the backing up portion of the test you back the trailer and tractor onto a side street which is 90 degrees to your left and align it within the orange cones normally you are allowed 5 pull forwards meaning you pull forward to align the trailer and then back up again ok i only needed 3 and the inspector said if you can back this in which is not intended for your size of trailer and tractor you can back up anything wished i had his statements on a recorder
the worst part i think about having a car over the hood is you gotta watch for those light poles when you making a turn i go into the turn and then swing back so the car fenders miss the pole and then turn back past the pole and the make the turn like a zigzag turn some turns were tight so i move a lane away before i make the turn i felt like a road hog but my job is to deliver those cars undamaged the “swing room” the section where the car behind the sleeper and the first car on the trailer sometimes is real close i know of a company driver who took out a light pole the other day and the one guy of the company people once shook a pole so bad the light fixture on the top fell out and went thru the roof of a van on the trailer totalled the van i heard/see

sorry i had to skip out earlier than i wanted to had to go to this raffle anyway my damages is oh jeez once on a load to bismarck north dakota i dropped one off there and went north to minot that is hour half north of biz on the way i encountered a gaggle of geese that flew out of this pothole due to the diesel noise they swung close to the truck and i thought nothing of it till i got to minot apparently one of them struck the tailgate of a mpv (foreign suv) and took out the glass partition and i didnt know it and the glass fell down to the bottom of the trailer and of course i was going 70 mph and the glass pieces were like a sandblasting thingy and took out this new van and the rest of the units behind it by time i got to minot to drop those remaining units off i got depressed big time man just like casey at bat at mudville 5000 dollars something company paid for it but i got reminded of it just once cuz the boss said others did a lot worse more often but it was on my shoulders and i was more careful since
the greatest stress on me when i am on the asphalt is ah if i had to smoke this van with 7 kids in it cuz it pulled in front of me and i was nt able to stop in time what is the headline in tmw paper qq deaf dumb driver kills 7 instead of dumb van driver pulls in front of a semi yep i almost did so many times i lost count usually this van pull in front of me and then flick a right turn signal half way down the block and wait seems like the ma knew ez ins money there at those kids expenses i had to pull to the righty and it didnt make my day looks so bright so you take note and respect those truck drivers and make their day an easy one my wife tells her kids now after she rode with me couple times i remmy that day in those cities traffic she slid from the sleeper bunk to the shifter cuz i had to brake just a trifle cuz this fucker didnt blink lights and cut in front of me to move to another lane oh what about those morons who speeeeeeeeeed up to pass me and then slow down and then pull into the exit forcing me into the fast lane but car is coming thru as well trying to beat me to the same or next exit thought what is their hurry to waste gas and ask for an automatic or free and extra burial
sad about those stupid gally protesting last spring got a lot of bad feedback paying those taxes to see those idiots damaging stuff i paid a lot of taxes due to my income and see those on ssdi go on to dc and damaging gally stuff wait some good people yup but bad reputation now just get the law and order episode couple wks ago whereas 35 deaf people got job doing this one all protesting i was ashamed so vocal in demanding interpreters and i am hauling and paying taxes for those morons those with ba or more qqq degrees from gally and still on ssdi they should use their “degree” for a better cause instead of ssdi cuz it is easier oh wait i am off that subject about deaf truckers so sorry if i offend any deafy out there \\\ so i dont get fired gn

Hello,Jack, thank you but let me clarifty you on NAD and my tow trucks.
Frist at all, We (my lawyer included) called and emailed NAD IN Oct 2005 to ask for thier assistance with this regulation situation and NAD responded us back and turned us down and told us they already brought this case before FMCSA hearing some years ago they lost this case and buried it they were not able to help us at all during this time but hope NAD can prove me wrong and would help sometime in future
Secondly, one of my fleet, a 12 ton wrecker which we ran daily basis, most are light duty towing like auto’s, small trucks, eqiupments and sometime small buildings also doing medium duty towing and I drive a 12 ton wrecker that wieghed under 26,000 lbs which is a non-CDL truck,but the real picture here
I can drive my own tow truck anywhere within my own state but not drive out of this state (that is BIG NO!) without a CDL because it is a commicial truck and I can tow anything but NO more than 10,000 lbs towages which is bigger than the duallies like 8 feet dump trucks, flatbed trucks, box trucks like Ryder’s or U-haul etc as about all single axles vans or trucks or RV’s ( that’s other BIG NO!) I need a CDL to tow heavier than 10,000 lbs or interstate driving ( out of states)
But dang, I am sorry to admit that I broke this rule everyday and still do until that regulation revised !! Again, thanks, Jack and Hey you, all trucking brothers and sisters keep up fighting until this regulation revised!

I just joined Women In Trucking to support the women in trucking because they just broke that massive “glass ceiling” or the barriers in terms of meaningful, gainful employment opportunity in trucking. I have been following the trucks that are driven by women and they are as good as mine; safety and alert. I noticed the women drivers do take good care of their rigs and perform good following distance relationship between other vehicles in all kinds of traffic situation. http://www.WomenInTrucking.org
Do you need your ears to help you to determine your following distance? No! You use your eyes and your mirrors more often! I scan my mirrors more often than the most CDL manuals “recommended”. When I go up and down the mountains, I scan farther up and down, looking for runaway trucks often. Suzanne E. Lee needs to recognize that it is impossible to determine the “acceleration and de-acceleration velocity” of yours and the other vehicles by listening only. Your vision provides you the most accurate information.
Admit it; it is time to update the old hearing requirements. I DO NOT believe that the warning buzzers frequencies are best at 2,000HZ or higher. It should be set at lot lower because you guys need to separate the frequencies apart from the radio, cell phones, and the CB. I have noticed some drivers that their hearing got overloaded so easily! How? I saw in their body language. What does Suzanne has to say? I believe her work is dangerous because she is training the readers to depend on their hearing only when it time to drive.
A token suggestion…just add a vibrator and put it under the seat. So you can leave your radio on full blast and still be able to feel the vibrating when warning alarm goes off. I use the vibrator to wake me up. Even, when the engine is idling during my sleeper berth time, I am able to identify the difference between the vibrating alarm and massive pulsing frequency of the power stoke…of my trusty Detroit Diesel. One time, I did identify a difference between healthy diesel injectors from tired and worn out ones. When wheel bearings is about getting shot, you will feel frequency that transmit right through the steering shaft and end up at your steering wheel! Low on power steering fluid will give you high frequencies “pitch and growl” Leaking coolant gives you a sweet smell, or leaking differential oil gives you strong odor, or burnt transmission oil will give you specific scent.
Hence, it is time to get your touch sensor off from the shelves, give her a major tune-up…and enjoy the musical concrete slabs…we know that for a long time.

I would like to talk about trucking school that refused to provide ASL interpreter or accepting ASL interpreter from Voc Rehab. I suggest that you file a complain with EEOC. “U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission”. I’ve done that two time against U.S. Postal Service and Safeway. It is easy to file a complain against trucking school. All you need to do is looking to how to file a complain. Look for your local office. Conact them. Then they will sent you some forms for you to write down to complain about them. Then they will set up a meeting with you and trucking school. EEOC will provide you ASL interpreter. Try to do it soon before limit time expires. GOOD LUCK!!

Sounds like you guys need get back to the “drawing board” and figure out what is best what to do next. Driving company trucks to Washington, DC without the “bill of lading” is illegal. Second, they are not that cheap, it can cost you up to thousands and thousands of dollars if you bring tractor-trailers to there.
I suggest you guys to study more in depth how the truck driver training school teaches their students and start talking to instructors. I bet you will learn more and more about them. That is the first step. Once you get CDL then you will understand more in depth. Then, you need to go on the road for at least 4 weeks with the trainers before you can go solo. That is not easy as you think and you need to log at least 200,000 miles before you can call yourself as a “trucker”
Some companies will take you in after 6 months solo, some after 1 year and others take you in after 2 years. You can tell that there is so much to learn how to handle your massive set of wheels in every situation.
Start talking to your legislators and I believe it is the right step to get it started.

I agree with you about driving the rigs to Washington D.C. Too much hassles. I believe that writing a letters to legislators is more much effective.
I will try to find a time to draw up the letter for you all to copy from it, sign your name and sent in to your local legislator.
Fundraising sounds real good. We need to set up our own deaf trucking association. Jacket and sweater seems good idea.

Hello to all deaf truck drivers and everyone on this site. My name is Frank. I am not deaf but just wanted to wish everyone here the very best in trying to change the laws so that you can have the chance to drive. I hope in the near future, everyone here can drive a truck if they want to. I just happened to run across this website and think you guys & ladies are doing a great job with your fight to drive. I have been a truck driver for over 25 yrs and sure wish the truck driving industry had you guys on the road. I can tell by your enthusiasm, that you all really want to drive and would do a great job if given the chance. Another reason this site means something to me is that my cousin is deaf and I grew up knowing how hard my cousin and all of you on this website have it each day compared to me,especially if you’re not given the chance to work like everyone else. I will check back from time to time to see what’s going on. Again, I wish you guys all the best. Good Luck and don’t give up your fight to drive!!

Jack,
I think you might will be surprised with what I might have to say.
I’m 31 years old, and I’m hearing impaired. And yes, I am a truck driver. I’ve been driving for 5 years, and I have never had a problem with anything like everyone else are.
So, I still just cannot believe, and am still appalled by all the discriminations that all deaf people who even has a CDL license or permit and they have been rejected by the opportunity to drive a truck.
I’m not going to make a long story here. All I need to say is:
NO MATTER WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE… COPS, BOSSES, TRUCKING COMPANIES, D.O.T PHYSICAL DOCTORS….. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO REFER TO THE FMCSR BOOK AND FOLLOW THE FINE PRINT IN THERE. 40 DB OR LESS. PERIOD. END OF STORY.

Hello all,
Have been reading all the problems…. I myself passed the class B with airbrake, and the DMV wont give me the CDL license cause I cant hear.
Been calling the Dept of Labor and captiol of my home state.
all their words was “anyone who cant hear a wisper by 20 steps away cant get CDL license”
By the way the wisper issue isnt related to the truck itself, it is outside the door.
DMV do give out spanish CDL handbook which is not fair to American.

Why about Deaf who owner big RV or homemobile for travel any state? which don’t have request CDL same idea about driver truck.
Better to ask Dept of Motor Vehicle or insurance company about which best rate low accident for deaf or hearing? Most high percent hearing people use celliphone while driver and lot accidents. They don’t care about it. Like hearing people who drunk driving high percent than not much deaf. Deaf know about obey Law better than hearing. I wish, Federal Govement chairperson will be first became deaf person then will change law every state. If any state don’t accept then order close of business or cut fund.
